Some Statistics on Thailand

According to http://www.worldreligionday.org/statistics.html, the religious makeup of Thailand is approximately:
Buddhist 94.4%
Islam 4%
Hindu 1.1%
Christian 0.5%

This is backed up by http://www.adherents.com/adhloc/Wh_326.html which references seemingly reputable studies which seem to be in pretty close agreement.

In looking up statistics on sexual immorality and social injustice, which is prominent in Thailand, a report by the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute http://www.unicri.it/wwk/publications/books/reports/r5.php states:
"The preliminary report submitted by the Special Rapporteur on violence against women [9] reads: 'In Thailand, statistics indicate that more than 50% of married women studied in Bangkok's biggest slum are regularly beaten by their husbands. (...) In Sri Lanka, 60% of women interviewed in a sample survey responded that they had been subjected to domestic violence during their period of cohabitation'"

According to one website (http://www.ffc.or.th/htmleng/factspage/page.htm):
  • # Estimates vary on the number of children in Thailand's commercial sex industry. The Centre for the Protection of Children's Rights (CPCR) says there are two million prostitutes, 40 per cent of whom are under 18.
  • ECPAT estimates that more than 1 million children worldwide enter this sex trade annually.
  • More than 100 web sites are present to promote teenage commercial sex in Asia alone.
  • 200,000-850,000 children in Thailand work in the sex industry. (Source: ECPAT Australia. ECPAT Development Manual. Melbourne, Australia, 1994, p. 29.)
  • According to the Political Economy Center Chulalungkborn University of Thailand, in 1993-1995 the world-sex industry generated an estimated $20-23 billion income. (Source: ECPAT Australia. ECPAT Development Manual. Melbourne, Australia, 1994, p. 29.)
  • As many as 70% of the girls rescued from brothels have been infected with HIV.
  • According to the Thai Department of Public Welfare, there are an estimated 12,000 - 18,000 child prostitutes in Thailand.
I have only posted a few of the many points from that site.

This is just to give a background of the underlying problems in Thailand and the need for Christ (and His love through ministries such as Le Refuge).
